While watching the Academy Awards, I couldn’t help but remember even the greatest actors and directors work commercially to support themselves. JK Simmons sells insurance. Salvador Dali, Ingmar Bergman, and yes, Wes Anderson have all made commercials! Creating commercials challenges filmmakers to think differently. I don’t necessarily consider making commercials selling out—just selling. Before I started Indie LIBRE, I would pitch commercial ideas on TONGAL as a daily writing exercise. If you’re a filmmaker that would like to keep you creativity fresh, perhaps writing and filming commercials might be a good creative exercise. Tongal is a free website where you pitch your ideas to various companies, and the winners receive money. For more information on Tongal, visit tongal.com. (Now, instead of pitching on Tongal, my daily writing exercise is this site.)
Also, after my recent year in Italy, I thoroughly enjoyed Wes’s Prada short. If you haven’t yet seen CASTELLO CAVALCANTI, here it is!
